Picture of Robin Williams busking in New York City in 1979. Garry Marshall wrote in his memoir about the time he was trying to cast the part of a space alien on Happy Days (and for a possible series). Talent agent Alan Iezman told his casting director Ronny (who was also Marshall's sister) about an amazing new talent. Iezman then asked Ronny to see a new comedian who he was representing named Robin Williams. When I asked Ronny what his credits were, she said he did street performing on corners and passed the hat for tips. "You want me to build a major network sitcom around a man who passes the hat for tips?" I said. "It is a VERY full hat," said Ronny.-- My aunt took the picture in April of 1979 of Robin Williams performing with Marc Weiner (top hat in the back) and also a man named Paul Dion who is not in this picture.

Subject: Figment Open Art Call
Hi,
I am writing you today to ask in your assistance in spreading the word of our, Figment, art call. We realize this is short notice but hope you will put this out to your lists.
Thank you
Figment Core Team
FIGMENT Boston is a free, family-friendly interactive art festival that transforms the Greenway in downtown Boston for a weekend. This year the event will be on Saturday July 26 and Sunday July 27, with a nighttime dance party in Dewey Square! Fun will definitely be had by all. The call for art closes on June 16, and I invite you to submit a project and join the fun! http://boston.figmentproject.org/submit_a_project
At FIGMENT, we invite you to make something, create something... Something that gets people to interact, to participate and collaborate with what you bring and with each other.
Your FIGMENT project can be anything... A game, an experiment, a request, a challenge, a guided meditation, a performance based on audience input, a sculpture that moves or responds, a heart-stopping technological innovation that changes the way we see the world… Anything that gets people working and playing and creating together.
We believe that when we can get people interacting with one another, talking to each other, creating and sharing experiences together, we are building important connections, weaving social fabric, creating community. And that leads to all kinds of amazing things… Personal and social transformation, unprecedented opportunities for sharing, learning, growing, thriving… Evolution of us as people and our society as a whole.
And it all starts with you...
And what you have to share!
Find out more information about FIGMENT Boston here:
http://boston.figmentproject.org/
Artist FAQ found here:
http://boston.figmentproject.org/artist_faqs
Just over a week to submit! However, if your are interested but feel you need more than a week to make a submission, contact me directly and I will help.

What are you bringing?

- Dear Buskers Advocates coordinators,
For the past two years Holly Elson has been researching and shooting interviews for a feature-length documentary entitled The Viking of 6th Avenue. The film will tell the colorful story of legendary musician Moondog, and uncover the motivations of a man determined not only to create original music but to live a truly original life. The Viking of 6th Avenue will contain a wealth of never before seen archival film/photos, home movies and rare audio recordings, as well as unique interviews with Moondog’s friends, family, collaborators and musicians who cite him as an influence including Jarvis Cocker, John Zorn, Debbie Harry, Damon Albarn, Philip Glass and many more. In hopes of completing the film within the year, the filmmakers have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds.
Because of Moondog's New York history, we are kindly asking for your support. With your assistance we will be able to reach a wide audience about the film and fundraising campaign.
Here is a link to our Kickstarter campaign with some more info about the film and a trailer: http://kck.st/1puWucw We have also written a short piece today about Moondog as a NYC icon and guidebook "must see."
The Kickstarter campaign will end on June 26 (26 days from now) so we hope you will consider supporting the film, financially or just by spreading the word:
Twitter: Tweet about our campaign. Our handle is @MoondogMovie.
Newsletter: Include info about our film and Kickstarter campaign with a link in an upcoming newsletter.
Facebook: Write a status update about the campaign and "Like" the film's Page - www.facebook.com/TheVikingof6thAvenue.
Coverage: Help connect us with other bloggers, writers and journalists who might also want to help us share a film about Moondog's story.
Emails: Send emails to your friends and colleagues, encouraging them to help raise awareness about this project.
We're very excited to be producing The Viking of 6th Avenue and educating a wider audience about Moondog and his music. We were very fortunate to be featured in the New York Times for our Kickstarter launch, but we still have a long way to go. With recently discovered photographs and unpublished Moondog scores still in their original Braille form, we hope you'll be able to help us bring this new material out into the world.
Please let me know if you have any questions or additional needs. Thank you so much for your support!
Best,
Merrill Sterritt <merrill@filmpresence.com>

- “NO TRICKS – LIFE AS A BUSKER” (September 2013)
We spent ten days with Buskers, during the Ferrara Busker Festival, to understand what’s the innermost nature of being a busker: why have they decided to follow this life? What does it mean to work for an audience that can be often distracted or even hostile? The festival gives the possibility to show how differents cultures can live together, to understand how common people see this unconventional form of art, and how it’s considered by institutions. You’ll see the smiles, the fears and the hopes of some Buskers from all over the world. A tale that want to be honest, direct, with no tricks.
Now is freely available on youtube!
Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lOTOy-JGj4
“NO TRICKS – VITA DA BUSKER”
distratto, a volte persino ostile.
trasparente, senza artifici narrativi, senza trucchi.

- Italian Federazione Nazionale Arte di Strada (National Street Art Federation) http://www.fnas.org
In Italy an amazing, innovative, and revolutionary web service is now ready to start (from April 2013) in the ambit of the free street show: a brand new web system will consent street artist to visit, select and book show venues in Milan and, in next future, also in other Italian cities, thus avoiding local presentation of documents, requests, fee payments etc.. The system, created and implemented by the Italian Federazione Nazionale Arte di Strada (National Street Art Federation http://www.fnas.org), in cooperation with the City Administration of Milano, will manage more than 200 venues in city center. The system will create a network of Italian cities (after the testing phase in Milan the FNAS will extend the system also in other big Italian cities such as Venezia, Roma, Napoli, Genova, Trieste, Bologna...). The final aim will be to join biggest cities in a single network. In this way, after one single subscription, the artist will be able to have access to all cities just booking venues online. The system is completely free for artists: they can insert brief descriptions of their shows, photos, contacts, and meantime the city administrations will be able to manage spaces and artists distribution in quick and simple way. Also, the city administration will have the advantage to use a simple and efficient way to distribute pitches, to coordinate timetables and calendars, to verify immediately the presence of artists on site, to close temporarily the sites involved in street works, other activities, events etc., and to inform citizens about where and when the shows, shared by typology, are going to be performed. The long term goal of this system will be to involve as many European cities as possible, but needless to say that the system can be used also by USA artists will to hat perform in EU and adopted with no problem by USA city administrations as well.
In this way an artist willing to tour in Europe or Italy for whole summer will simply join online, and through one single web platform will be able to select cities, visit and choose the show venues available, to program dates and timetables and to start touring avoiding presentation of documents city by city, paper requests, payments, queues and waste of time.
For the moment you can visit the beta version of web site http://www.stradaperta.it. The subscription of artists will be allowed once whole system will be fully tested and verified (mid April 2013) USA Artists and city administrations interested can request more info at staff@fnas.org
- Buskers Bunkhouse Free Housing for Artists - http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/buskers-bunkhouse-free-housing-for-artists
Buskers Bunkhouse, is a haven for, musicians, artists, and buskers. Ms Pearl, a resident of the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, began the Kamp naming it Kamp Katrina after the storm as a tent city in her backyard, housing those displaced by the storm. Buskers Bunkhouse has evolved into an art colony and refuge for buskers, independent filmmakers, and performers. The Kamp Katrina project film and book was a collaboration between Buskers Bunkhouse residents, a California filmmaker, a college writing teacher, a high school writing teacher, and an associate dean.
The project began during a professional conference in New Orleans where the film Kamp Katrina was screened. Ms Pearl invited the audience to her home to see the real story behind the film, as she believed that the film didn't “tell the real story.” Currently, the project includes this book as well as a forthcoming film Kamp Katrina: A Love Letter to New Orleans, and a website that continues the Kamp Katrina story online.
Buskers Bunkhouse helps Local and international artists aid in the recovery, restoration, and rebirth of their city's unique cultural practices thru hosting artists and bands from all over the world, participating and grand marshaling parades and second lines for non profit 's such as the Goodchildren's Carnival Club. Participating in grass rots political efforts to maintain the Bywater, Buskers Bunkhouse has put together a non profit brass band with the help of Miguel Alvarado and Clifford MC Peak, two Long time musicians. We do jazz Funerals and play music for the community.

Article on living statue performer in Harvard Square LINK
The Pavement Stage is an exploration of outdoor performance in all of its different forms and provides an in depth overview to a world and lifestyle unlike any other. From 1979 through to the present, David Cassel has travelled around the world to over 40 countries creating, presenting and experiencing a wide range of solo and ensemble street performances. His voyages have revealed some fascinating insight into the techniques and performance styles used by himself and some of the other personalities that have populated this extremely vital and satisfying form of public interaction and community development. As street performance has grown in popularity internationally so has the civic policy that governs the public space in almost every city on the globe. While some cities celebrate the form through festival, others outlaw it. Why does street performance create such an extreme reaction, are street performers anarchists? http://www.davidcassel.com/thepavementstage.html

- May 2010 Dear Sirs,
First of all, many compliments for your excellent job in the ambit of free street performance: we, in Europe, are just starting to afford the problem, trying to overcome, in a transnational context, all limits given by local and national regulations and laws on matter.
We, as Federazione Nazionale Arte di Strada of Italy (National Federation for Street Arts), being the sole offcial federation for Italy, associating artists, companies and art operators, will now try to give our contribution in this matter, thanks to the project "OPEN Street", funded by Culture Commission of European Community (http://www.open.street.eu) and where we act as Italia Co-organizer. For us here in Italy, some positive USA Courts decisions in favour of artists (we read something from your site) are simply amazing...and this demonstrates us how much we still have to work in Europe to obtain such results.....
One thing more, we want to ask you if it is possible to insert a link of Italian Federation. in your Links, Festivals and References webpage.
Unfortunately the whole website http://www.fnas.org is in Italian, but we do hope that USA Street Artists can find our website useful anyway...
many Thanks for kind attention

- Although the cultural increase in value is to be recognized clearly!
- End this Ignorance!
- Street theatre is art, and thus has both the right and as well the requirement to be promoted!!!
- Culture for all!
Berlin lacht! e.V.
- There is hardly a country that spends more funds on culture than Germany.
- Germany has 793 publicly promoted places for theatre, however not one place which is dedicated to street theatre.
- 2 billion euro is spent annually on culture, however only 8% of the population are reached.
- 92% of the population do not go to the theatre. Theatre makers do not reach their public and do not feel fulfilled by the cultural orders posed on them.
- Street theatre is free of charge and accessible for all. However, it receives no promotion, although the number of spectators exceeds that over that of the promoted theatres

They issue a free permit in Savannah now. The catch is they only want to give it out to locals. Pearson DeLoach in the leisure services department said that the constitution doesn't matter in Savannah. After arguing with him for a while he finally gave me the permit after I challenged him to tell me what harm I cause to the public. I think this country would be a better place if he would get out of it. He's held that job for 40 years, that's far too long for someone that ignorant to have a say in how I exercise my free speech.
Keep up the good work guys, I just heard about your site recently so the next day I strike gold I'm making a donation to help you spread the word.

After a recent five month trial period, April 1, 2008, will mark the beginning of a permanent “Street Performers Program” at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. Our own tireless activism of the past 6 years, combined with help from the ACLU and the Port Authority have given rise to a fair and transparent program which accommodates permitted and “First-Come-First-Served” Street performers on San Francisco Port Authority land. Although this is not city-wide, this program represents a huge improvement over the 4-year police crackdown on performers (primarily musicians). After 6 years of political activism, I was frankly ready to call it quits because the effort involved was wearing me down and draining energy from my life, musical and otherwise. Now, I am happy to report, there is a marked improvement to the street performers scene at Fisherman’s Wharf. One year ago, boldfaced sidewalk merchandising enforced by blatant thuggery prevailed along The Embarcadero and Jefferson Streets. The four year police crackdown on activist musicians had led to the unintended (or possibly intended) consequence of ceding sidewalk space to the most virulent violence-prone element while the police and the “Power that Be” spouted boilerplate about how it was beyond their control, when in fact, public policy towards shared public space clearly sets the tone for the usage of such space.
I am optimistic that were you to tour the Wharf area on any given day, from now onward, you would likely see an wonderful mix of jugglers, musicians, silver mimes, balloon clowns, magicians, break dancers, and most recently, the Sardine Family Circus, who apparently had been in Boston recently. There are still wrinkles to be worked out in this program, but the basics are in place to provide visitors to San Francisco with a delightful mix of performance arts.
I want to thank you for your far-sighted activism in having set up your web site as a reference point in this nationwide struggle. Street Art and Performance has increasing relevance as monopolization and financial consolidation chokes off smaller expressive artistic and entertainment efforts. Please continue to link our web site, http://www.sfstreetmusic.com, with yours and the basis of the Street Performers Plan is listed at http://www.sfport.com under Real Estate/Street Performers. Last but not least, an additional product of our activism has been the production of two videos, which I believe, highlights the repeated cycle of civic repression and the attendant universal mechanisms of enforcement. These two short videos are slightly under 10 minutes each. They can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/sfoap, which is an acronym for San Francisco Open Air Performers.
Best wishes and heartfelt thanks!

Up until then, she had performed as a person. But the police were harassing her in Santa Cruz, and the ACLU had to protect her rights. And the police had costumes and she didn't. So she decided to pit police against a nun on the streets to see if that helped the situation. And it DID! All of a sudden, Mother Zosima could say or do just about anything she wanted! March 2013
Italian Federazione Nazionale Arte di Strada (National Street Art Federation) http://www.fnas.org In Italy an amazing, innovative, and revolutionary web service is now ready to start (from April 2013) in the ambit of the free street show: a brand new web system will consent street artist to visit, select and book show venues in Milan and, in next future, also in other Italian cities, thus avoiding local presentation of documents, requests, fee payments etc..
December 2011
The website http://www.fnas.org is in Italian. http://www.fnas.org/protectweb/rass_fest.asp - through this search engine you can find abt 200 Italian street show festivals and events, including all contacts of festival organizers and art directors http://www.fnas.org/registrazione/ordini_en.asp - instruction (in English) to order and receive the yearbook "Kermesse" the only complete guide on street performing art, printed every (in Italian) by the F.N.A.S. Also, keep in mind that the Federation can be contacted, in English, for any info you may need regarding street performing/hat passing laws, rules and procedures in Italy: staff@fnas.org

At the famous Kaiser-Wilhelm-GedächtnisKirche, “Kaiser William Memorial Church is located in Berlin on the Kurfürstendamm in the centre of the Breitscheidplatz. The original church on the site was built in the 1890s. It was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943. The present building, which consists of a church with an attached foyer and a separate belfry with an attached chapel, was built between 1959 and 1963. The damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall.” This is one of Berlins Biggest Tourist attractions. More than 20000 People pass by every day, and it was the centre of Berlin before the wall came down.

PRESS RELEASE 10/09/06
Movie promotion on the walls of Pittsburgh
Documentary film trailer to be shown around town
Tonerwoods Productions, a local multi-media company has announced an innovative grass roots advertisement campaign to promote their documentary feature film ON EVERY CORNER (OEC). A film trailer and several five to fifteen minute documentary films featuring Pittsburgh Buskers will be digitally projected onto city buildings. The promotion is designed to introduce the local cast of characters who appear in the feature Busking documentary which filmed in Pittsburgh throughout the summer and fall of 2004.
Buskers are street entertainers (singers, dancers, jugglers, etc.) who perform on the streets and are rewarded with the occasional tip. The OEC promotion will be the first ever multi-media Busking experiment; the films will actually Busk themselves. Multiple area building walls will unknowingly “host” the projected films. Tonerwoods has designed a portable DVD/Projection system and will move the films from wall to wall on weekends throughout the Southside, Oakland, Downtown and The Strip District this fall.
In true Busking fashion and empty hat and sign reading “Need $$ for theater” will accompany the rig. The producers hope to raise awareness of Busking in Pittsburgh, promote the OEC feature, and if they’re lucky, raise enough money to secure a local art house theater to premiere the film. For additional information about the OEC projects contact Tonerwoods Productions at:

Subject: Winged City -- Gevleugelde Stad (1 and 2 April 2006)
Dutch Street Theater Festival Showcase http://www.gevleugeldestad.net
Latest up-dates about 'Gevleugelde Stad' ('Winged City': www.gevleugeldestad.net) which will take place a little earlier this year
Gevleugelde Stad (1 and 2 April 2006) wants to promote itself even more as a festival 'from, for and by street theatre performers'. Therefore the artistic organisation invites its colleagues to shape this festival in a joint effort. This can be done by them voicing their contribution to the festival.
For this year, the cooperation with Cultureel Centrum Ieper is &endash;for the third time- confirmed. We are even establishing a festival secretariat in CC. This will make access to the festival possible throughout the year. CC Ieper takes full charge of the logistics of the project. As before, without their support and effort the next edition of Gevleugelde Stad would not be possible.
This year, it will be necessary to submit participation on time. The demand is bigger than the number of playing spaces that we can offer. Therefore we have decided on a limit of 50 groups. The last edition had over 75 submissions. When a group is not selected this does not mean that the performance is not of a qualitative high standard but rather because of limitations of budget and performance space. One can still register for the specialized fair in which one can promote oneself as this is the meeting place of 'Backstage' of the artists and promoters.
Performances which are not selected can still qualify for other promotional festivals. We have joint ventures with different promotional festivals and platforms for which you can be asked or invited. Also, for the next edition we will continue to work together with 'BUITENKANS' in Nijverdal through de Stichting Kunsten op Straat/STRACIBU in Ghant (on organisation of Dienst Kunst/ISTF/GEVLEUGELDE STAD)/INTERNATIONAAL STRAATKUNSTENFESTIVAL in Balen/PAULUSFEESTEN in Ostend/ vzw MAGDALENA (Platform Nieuw Talent). Furthermore we are negotiationg with 'het Lachfestival' in Houthalen, OPENDOEK, Infoartiest.be for increasing the performance possibilities of our colleagues.
The specialized fair will this year be open free of charge to function as a meeting place exclusively for artists and promoters/organisers during the festival. In this area artists are designated a place that they can do up to their own liking (this also for artists which were not selected). For this is the place where promoters are welcomed. As mentioned above, it will be free of charge this year as last year the entrance fees kept some promoters from entering. Nevertheless we had 180 promoters visiting during the festival (organisers/ tourism centres/ Art and Culture venues/ festivals) and on top of that over 50 promoters received the specialized fair booklet after the festival.

In order for things to work out in an honest and objective way we have decided, like last year, to surround ourselves with a sounding board. This consists of a representation of the organisation/promoters/organisers/artists. The names of the people in charge of the sounding board will be made public 19 September.
They carry the 'heavy' responsibility of a first selection and advice and support the organisation. We take their advice into account and follow it through as far as budget and logistics allow for. This means that we are limited by performance spaces, and go out of our way to keep it interesting for the artist by providing the necessary breathing space which allows us to keep the pleasant atmosphere of the festival.Specialized fair
This year, the specialized fair will be organised by info artiest.be. This new lobby for street theatre performers acts on behalf of its colleagues (they themselves are artists) and negotiate on a national level with Kabinet van Cultuur of Minister Anciaux. They strive to get to better guidance and communication between the different partners within the cultural economical market.
During the start of the festival they organise debates between artist/promoters/booking offices/organisers/the ministry/ OPENDOEK/VTI. Moreover they invite guest speakers who supply us with specialized information which in fact we should all be familiar with e.g. grants translated in human terms
The specialized fair will, similar to last year, be open only to artists and interested people from the working field (promoters/organisers/CC's/culture and tourism/culture coordinators). There will be no entrance fee.

New York City South Street Seaport Festival June 18, 2005JugglrJosh@aol.com
Dear Friends of the South Street Seaport Street Performers,
Last year the South Street Seaport Requested an unprecedented $500 fee for the street performers to work. After concerned phone calls, E-mails, Letters and meetings supporting the program, the fee request was dropped and the common ground of a Street Performing Festival was agreed upon.
The South Street Seaport Management approved of a festival and fundraiser to celebrate the program that has been at the Seaport for over 20 years, to sustain it for the future and to highlight the performers currently in the program, as well as successful acts that have been through the program. There will be a stipend for the participating acts.
The Festival will be held on Saturday, June 18th, 2005. It will be a part of an arts festival towards the revitalization of downtown New York City.
As of January 12th, the festival has been given sponsorship by the Lower Manhattan Marketing Association (LOMA) who will include the Seaport Street Performer Festival under it's umbrella. LOMA is having a festival from June 15th-18th, 2005 in lower Manhattan similar to the Busker's Ball of the 1990s.
I'm sending out applications to other Arts Organizations as potential sponsors for the festival. I've sent an application to the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the decision will be announced in March.
It will take a lot of effort to make this a successful event and sustain the program as NYC continues to rebuild.
If you would like to participate in the festival as a performer, or if you would like to volunteer working as an organizer of the festival, please respond to this E-mail.
Thank you again for your support of the street performing program at the South Street Seaport.
Sincerely, Josh Weiner JugglrJosh@aol.com

This summer we are celebrating the 80th Port Huron to Mackinac Sailing Race, the world's largest freshwater sailing event. There are more than 270 entries (3,000 crew members) and 150,000 fans, spectators and revelers who participate. Such notables as Roy Disney and Bob Seger are entered in the event.
We are looking for performers to add to the festivities around town during the events that week. These would be non-paid opportunities, in that the performer will not be paid a fee to appear, but may "pass the hat" among those they entertain. If Community Arts Advocates is not an appropriate source for this, possibly you could suggest some alternative sources for contacting up and coming artists who would like to take advantage of this large public forum.
Thank you for your consideration.
